Calling All Irish Draught Enthusiasts
WANT to learn more about what to look for in an Irish Draught and gain useful tips and advice in the run up to the show season?
The Lincolnshire-branch of the Irish Draught Horse Society has organised a day with leading Irish Draught expert, judge and council
member John Newborough. Bringing his many years experience to the event spectators will be able to gather valuable advice on all
aspects of the breed throughout the day on Saturday, February 9.
The event is being held at Hill House Equestrian Centre near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire and looks set to be very popular. Organiser Paul
Gould said: “We are hoping the day will be well supported. John has considerable knowledge that will prove very useful in the run up to
the show season. “As well as taking an in depth look at the breed, the day also provides the opportunity for Irish Draught enthusiasts to
get together to catch up after the winter months.”
The day will start with a look at inhand showing, conformation, turn out and presentation. John will be discussing attention to detail, limb
quality and movement when studying the 2007 Supreme Youngstock Champion at the Irish Draught Breed Show, Alkborough Kismet
owned by Paul Gould.
He will then move on to ridden competitions and will compare the Pure Bred Irish Draught with the Sport Horse. The 2006 Baileys
Youngstock Champion, Hawklands Whispering Wind, a winner of the four to six-year-old gelding class at the 2007 breed show, and Irish
Draught cross Thoroughbred, Lowmoor Last Chance, a big winner in hand before continuing his career under saddle with Tim Smith, will
then come before John.
Limited places are available for the day which will commence at around 11am and finish at 3pm – with buffet refreshment included – book
early to avoid disappointment.
The event is ticket only and are available to members £15 and non-members £20. Contact Paul Gould or Pauline Mitchell on (01652)
618686 or email sasnags@msn.com to book your place.
NPS Judges Selection Scheme 2008
The NPS has reviewed its method of selecting mixed Mountain and Moorland judges and from January 2008 the new scheme will be
introduced. The scheme is being developed, and improved with the co-operation of the Breed Societies, who have provided information,
help and support. The new programme has been set out to help future judges understand the breed type and way of going, of all our
native breeds. Any prospective judge will know their own breed and perhaps one or two others, but to have an understanding of all the
breeds is a challenge and the best way to meet this challenge is to see the ponies
To be eligible the applicant must be an NPS member, on a Breed Society Judge’s panel or have been a member of a Breed Society for at
least 7 years and have their application approved by that Breed Society
The candidates will have to complete the following 4 Stages of Assessment
Stage1 During the first year the candidate must attend a number of breed events of different breeds, these will be suggested by each
Breed Society and a list will be available from NPS office. Attendance will be expected at any NPS, or NPS Area training days which are
being run, and proof of attendance will be required from these events
Stage 2 Rules Assessment. This should be taken before 1st June each year. Assessment days will held at NPS Area level in different
parts of the country. The assessment will be in the form of a written paper of multiple choice and written answer questions on NPS
Rules, General Conformation, Breed Standards, and judging situations
There will be a fee of £5 and the rules assessment may be retaken if failed 3 times in 5 years
Stage 3 Practical Assessment. This will be run by the NPS at a venue where Riding Ponies, Hunter Ponies and all breeds of Mountain
and Moorland Ponies will be seen under saddle and inhand. Breed type, way of going and conformation will discussed with the
candidates by Breed specialists. The candidates will then be assessed later, looking at a selection of ponies under show conditions
and interviewed by Assessors in a similar way as carried out under the present scheme. There will be a fee of £45 and the practical
assessment may be retaken if failed 3 times in 5 years
Stage 4 A Probationary Period may be required, which will depend on past judging experience and assessment results of the
candidate. Candidates will be expected to attend Breed Society events for the remaining Breeds they have not attended at their earliest
opportunity, with proof of attendance supplied to the NPS office.
The first Rules Assessment will be held by NPS Scotland on the 2nd February 2008 at Dunfermline at their Stewards Conference. For
further details and an Application Form, please look at the NPS Website: www.nationalponysociety.org.uk or contact the NPS office on
