HISTORY

Between 1918 and 1923 the whole estate was sold off, it is believed the stone from the Mansion was transported to America and a replica building was made from them.

Very little is known of what happened to the grand pavilion which overlooked the cricket ground.

During the 1940s the cricket club moved from Kettleburgh road to Bentries Meadow by kind permission of the landowner Mr Goddard, who was in fact the father of the present owner and Honary Life President of Easton cricket club MrsJ.M.Hammond.

Many local residents kept the club going during the following 30 years. Names like Roddy & John Martin, George & Cyril Foster, George & Ted Read,Ted Cattermole, David Howard, John Newson and many more.

During the late 70s the club saw a decline in members and with a threat of the ground being ploughed up if no cricket was being played on it. Mrs Beryl Webster and Mr Van-Den Around came to the rescue and rallied round some of the locals and managed to arrange one or two matches thereby keeping the ground safe.

In1982 two new residents moved into the village namely, Fred Mitchell and David Grimwood. David Grimwood took over the running of Easton White Horse and Fred Mitchell moved into Home Farm Cottages. David was a keen cricketer who had played for Thorpeness. Fred had moved to Easton from
Derbyshire and was also a very keen cricketer having had trials for Derbyshire CCC and also played a good standard of cricket in the Derbyshire Alliance League.

Both men made their debut for Easton in the same game against Bedfield.

Fred Mitchell scored 117 not out, and David Grimwood took 6 wickets for 20 runs.

It was this chance coincidence that really started the ball rolling for the future of the club .

A new committee was formed with David as Captain, Fred as treasurer and Phillip Revett as chairman. The first task was to arrange more matches and to fundraise for a new pavilion. The following season saw a new pavilion ,more fixtures and more members. The matches became more competitive
friendlies to attract a younger element into the club.

In 1984 David Grimwood found that with his success in the White Horse he couldnot continue his roll at the cricket club, therefore Fred Mitchell took over as Captain, treasurer, and groundsman, two rolls of which he is today including chairman!!!.

During the following two years the club began to grow, and was attracting more junior members. Fred ,then with the help of player coach Andy Burch started coaching sessions with the youngsters, but it was noticeable that some of the young players were leaving Easton CC and joining other clubs to
experience league cricket. This was seen as a major problem and Fred had to convince the membership that the way forward was for the club to join the Suffolk Alliance League to keep our young players and give them the competitiveness they required.

In 1989 Easton CC joined the Alliance league in division E and at the end of the season found themselves Champions.

That set the scene for the coming years until 1996 when Easton CC was crowned as League Champions and gaining a place in the Suffolk Premier League intermediate division.

By this time Easton had attracted many new players and a 2nd XI team had been formed and also Easton had a colts team playing . Nigel Rackham took on the roll of secretary and also became a qualified coach. Mary Berry took on the roll of treasurer from Fred Mitchell as he took control as
Chairman.

It was during the season of 1996 that Fred had a chance meeting with a visiting umpire who had experience in developing clubs with the help of the National Lottery Board and it was this meeting that gave Fred the inspiration and vision to attempt major developments to the club taking it into the 21st century.

With the help of the club secretary Nigel Rackham who worked endless hours on the project and Mary Berry as treasurer and the full backing and support of the clubs Honary Life President Mrs J M Hammond and also good advise from many members and supporters of the club, the new facilities were officially declared open by Mr Ray Carter of Sport England on the 14th May 2000.
